ALCS Wrapup - Worst Groundscrew Ever
Sure Mariano was the MVP -- three scoreless innings in Game 7 and two two-inning saves. And Boone's heroics will be remembered for a long time. But, lost in the shuffle is the fact that this series was decided by Boston having the worst grounds crew ever. Consider:
1. Game 3, Grounds crew member, Paul Williams, picks a fight with Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia. Sure, Nelson and Garcia might go to jail, but in the meantime, they sure were fired up.
2. Game 4 is postponed because of rain. There was no rain during the scheduled time, but the field is so poorly maintained during the rainstorm of the afternoon, that it is unplayable. This sets up the Lowe/Wells matchup in Game 5 which was supposed to favor Lowe, but Wells got an extra day's rest.
3. Yesterday afternoon, they did this
The grounds crew at Fenway Park isn't afraid of a curse.
On Thursday afternoon, hours before the Boston Red Sox met the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium to decide the American League Championship Series, Fenway Park workers painted the World Series logo on the grass behind home plate.
The Great Bambino could not ignore this and decided to punish the Sox.
