The Curse Will Have Its Way
I never wanted a game 7, but it looks like the curse will have its way. The Sox can't win an important Game 7, and now that the Cubs are out, this is a big Game 7. Losing to the Cubs would have sent the Red Sox Nation into convulsions -- for Chicago, finally the embarrassment of 1918 would be avenged -- for the Sox, another 7 years of bad luck.
But, that's not going to happen. Graham, W, Jeb and Pudge took out Moseley Braun, Dusty, Wood and Prior -- so there is no humiliating loss in the World Series waiting for the Sox.
In case you don't know -- here are the rules of the curse:
1. The Sox cannot win an important Game 7
2. The better the Sox team, the more humiliating the loss (see 1978)
3. No Sox franchise players can win on the Sox (Babe was the last) -- Ted Williams, Yaz, Pudge, Rocket, Boggs, and now Garciaparra.
4. The more the fans want it, the less likely it will happen.
All of my Sox fan friends instinctively know #4, and so I get emails like this: "It has been a very good series, even if Boston blows it tonight I'll take pride in the fact that they made the Yankees work for it." and "Win or lose, I really am thrilled to see it go to game 7. It should be a fantastic game tonight."
Sounds like a bunch of defeatists -- or maybe, they trying to fool the curse gods.
