The Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts
has endorsed Pat Jehlen.
Representative Pat Jehlen of Somerville was one of the stalwart members of the progressive caucus in the State House through the Finneran era. Pat is now in a four way race for the State Senate seat formerly held by the late Senator Charles Shannon (a district that includes all or parts of Medford, Somerville, Winchester, and Woburn). The primary election, which will effectively decide who wins the Senate seat, will be held on Tuesday August 30th, and Pat needs our help.
The Statewide Coordinating Committee, by a unanimous 9-0 vote, has given Pat PDM's endorsement in the race. If you don't know Pat, please take a few minutes to visit her website www.patjehlen.org learn more about Pat, and review the list of people and organizations that are supporting her.
And so has Bob Reich
"There is a rare kind of politician with both courage and conviction," said Reich, "Pat Jehlen is one those politicians.” He cited Jehlen’s 15 years in the legislature, where she consistently supported increased funding for public schools, healthcare for all, affordable housing, and raising the minimum wage. She defended equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples and reproductive rights for women. "She has not faltered or bowed to pressure," he said referring to Jehlen’s history of standing up to former House Speaker Tom Finneran, who is now under indictment.
Reich compared Jehlen to the late Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, who voted against the war in Iraq even though most observers said it was safer to vote in favor of it. "More than any issue, people care about principle," said Reich. "In Minnesota, in Massachusetts, and across the country we respect principle. We want politicians with courage and conviction."
Reich also announced that the statewide organization Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts, which was formed by supporters of Reich, had endorsed Jehlen – joining groups like the Somerville Teachers Association, the Mass Nurses Association, and more than 30 other progressive groups and unions.
